Mandhata Island — Madhya Pradesh
Omkareshwar is a uniquely shaped island on the Narmada River whose outline naturally resembles the sacred Hindu symbol 'OM' (॥). Home to the 4th Jyotirlinga, this mystical island holds two sacred Shivalingas — Omkareshwa…
The island of Mandhata in the Narmada River is shaped like the sacred symbol OM when viewed from above — a divine coincidence that makes Omkareshwar extraordinarily special. The island houses two Shivalingas: Omkareshwar (the Jyotirlinga) and Amareshwar — together they represent the complete form of Shiva. Performing the Narmada Parikrama (circumambulation of the island) on foot is one of the most sacred acts a devotee can perform here.
The island of Mandhata naturally forms the sacred symbol OM — a phenomenon that makes Omkareshwar perhaps the most symbolically profound Jyotirlinga in India.
A serene boat ride on the holy Narmada River with views of the temple, ghats, and surrounding hills — a deeply meditative and beautiful experience.
The 7-km Narmada Parikrama (circumambulation of the island) is performed by thousands of devotees daily — a spiritually immersive walk through temples and ghats.
Both Omkareshwar and Amareshwar Shivalingas are on the same island — together counted as one Jyotirlinga, offering a rare dual blessing.
A holy dip in the Narmada is believed to grant moksha. Pind Daan (ancestral rites) performed here are considered especially powerful for peace of departed souls.
The island is dotted with ancient cave temples, rock-cut shrines, and centuries-old ghats — a treasure trove of ancient Indian spiritual heritage.
