Grishneshwar (also called Ghrishneshwar or Kusumeswar) is the last of the 12 Jyotirlingas, located in the village of Verul near Ellora, Maharashtra. The temple was rebuilt by Maratha Queen Ahilyabai Holkar in the 18th century — the same queen who also rebuilt Kashi Vishwanath. The name 'Grishneshwar' means 'Lord of Compassion' — and the story of a devoted woman's unwavering faith despite personal tragedy is the mythological foundation of this temple. Being just 1 km from the Ellora Caves makes Grishneshwar a unique combination of world-class spiritual and cultural heritage.
Visiting Grishneshwar completes the Dwadash (12) Jyotirlinga yatra — an achievement that is said to grant the ultimate spiritual merit of visiting all of Shiva's divine manifestations.
Located just 1 km from the Ellora Caves — 34 rock-cut cave temples spanning Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions — Grishneshwar offers a unique spiritual-cultural double visit.
The legend of Kusuma — whose son was murdered but whose devotion to Shiva brought him back to life — is one of the most moving stories in all of Shiva mythology.
The temple was rebuilt by the legendary Maratha queen and philanthropist Ahilyabai Holkar — who also rebuilt Kashi Vishwanath — connecting two Jyotirlingas through one great ruler's legacy.
The famous Ajanta Caves (100 km away), with their magnificent Buddhist paintings, can be combined with Grishneshwar for one of India's most culturally rich pilgrimage tours.
As the least-crowded of all 12 Jyotirlingas, Grishneshwar offers an intimate, peaceful darshan experience — perfect for meditation and personal communion with the divine.
