Kedarnath Jyotirlinga, part of the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit, sits at an altitude of 3,583 metres in the Garhwal Himalayas. The ancient stone temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century and is one of the most remote yet most visited temples in India. Kedarnath is accessible only by foot (16 km trek from Gaurikund) or by helicopter. The temple is believed to be the spot where the Pandavas found and worshipped Lord Shiva — who appeared in the form of a bull's hump (the Shivalinga here represents the back/hump of a bull).
No other Jyotirlinga offers the breathtaking setting of Kedarnath — surrounded by the Kedarnath, Kedardom, and Bharatekuntha peaks with glaciers all around.
For those who cannot trek, helicopter services from Phata/Sersi/Guptkashi make Kedarnath accessible — a divine aerial experience over the Himalayas.
Kedarnath is deeply connected to the Mahabharata — the Pandavas worshipped Shiva here to atone for the sin of Kurukshetra war. The temple itself is believed to be built over their footprints.
Even in summer, the surrounding peaks are snow-capped and the air is crisp and pure — the physical journey becomes a deep meditative experience in itself.
The Mandakini River flowing from the Chorabari Glacier beside the temple at sunrise — bathed in golden light — is an unforgettable visual blessing.
The ancient stone temple built by Adi Shankaracharya has withstood earthquakes and floods for over 1200 years — a testament to ancient Indian engineering genius.
