Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is located on the highway connecting Dwarka and Bet Dwarka on Gujarat's western coast. The name 'Nageshwar' means 'Lord of Serpents' — Shiva is worshipped here as Nageshwar (the cosmic serpent protector) and Nageshwari Devi (Parvati) is the consort deity. According to the Shiva Purana, this is where Lord Shiva defeated the demon Daruka after a devotee prayed to him for protection. The giant Shiva statue in meditation is one of the largest in India and has become an iconic image of faith.
Nageshwar Shiva is worshipped as the destroyer of all poisons — praying here is believed to protect devotees from snake bites, toxic situations, and negative energies.
The 25-metre meditating Shiva statue at the temple complex is one of the most dramatic and awe-inspiring religious monuments in India — truly a sight to behold.
Nageshwar is perfectly combined with Dwarka Dham — one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites — making this a double-sacred pilgrimage in one visit.
A short boat ride to the island of Bet Dwarka — associated with Lord Krishna's childhood home — adds deep spiritual significance to the Nageshwar yatra.
The legend of Nageshwar — where Shiva appeared to defeat the demon Daruka and free his devotees from captivity — is one of the most dramatic stories in the Shiva Purana.
The underground sanctum housing the Shivalinga surrounded by a large courtyard and the grand Shiva statue make Nageshwar a visually spectacular pilgrimage site.
