Bhorgiri — Maharashtra
Bhimashankar is one of the most beautifully located Jyotirlingas — nestled deep in the Sahyadri Mountains of Maharashtra, surrounded by a dense wildlife sanctuary that is the source of the Bhima River. The journey itself…
Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is located in the Sahyadri Hills at 3,250 feet in the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary — home to the Indian Giant Squirrel (Maharashtra's state animal). According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva appeared here after defeating the demon Tripurasura, and the sweat from his battle formed the Bhima River which flows from this spot. The ancient Hemadpanthi-style temple architecture is an excellent example of Maharashtra's religious heritage.
Located within Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary — home to Indian Giant Squirrels, leopards, and rare birds. A pilgrimage that doubles as a nature immersion.
During monsoon, Bhimashankar transforms into a green paradise with misty clouds surrounding the temple — one of the most dramatic pilgrimage settings in India.
The 12-km trekking route (Shidi Ghat) to the temple through Sahyadri forest is a favourite among both pilgrims and trekkers — a rewarding spiritual and physical journey.
Bhimashankar is the origin point of the Bhima River — a fact that adds deep mythological and geographical significance to this sacred site.
The temple's Hemadpanthi architectural style with intricately carved stones is a rare example of medieval Maharashtrian temple art, dating back several centuries.
Unlike some Jyotirlingas, Bhimashankar retains a peaceful, intimate atmosphere — making darshan and meditation here a deeply personal spiritual experience.
